SDGs - a strategic landmark for RUDN University scientists

Senezh Management Workshop completed the fourth module of the Management Talent Pool Development Program in Science, Technology, and Higher Education. The only participant from RUDN University was Alexander L. Chupin, PhD in Economics, Deputy Dean for Research at the Faculty of Economics.

The main goal of the programme is to train managerial skills of young scientists who have already achieved significant success in scientific and educational activities. Alexander Chupin shared with us the results of teamwork during four educational modules. On the final day of the training, together with strategists from science, education and technology, representatives of leading universities and organisations, the team project “Introduction of the cross-cutting competence Sustainable Development into educational programmes” was presented to the commission.

Cross-cutting competences are knowledge, skills and abilities that help a person to achieve success in different spheres, regardless of a particular profession. Specialists able to manage sustainable development projects are in demand in all sectors, including manufacturing and technology. The team is confident that the project implementation will contribute to the reduction of carbon footprint and irrational use of resources.

“Ideologists argue – economics unites. We have managed to unite people from different scientific disciplines to work on one project. The RUDN University experience shows that sustainable development is an ideal platform for interdisciplinary scientific research. We considered the goals of sustainable development in the context of moving from the global level - the biosphere - to more localised aspects: society, economy, politics, law and partnership. Without addressing paramount environmental issues, it is impossible to move forward, to improve social institutions, and to take technological leadership positions.

The goal of our project by 2030 is to ensure the updating of educational programmes in 60% of all specialities with the formation and inclusion of the cross-cutting competence of ‘sustainable development’. The mechanisms for achieving this goal include the implementation of the project in the existing plan for changing the education system since 2007, and the implementation of partnerships between the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation, universities and industrial partners.

Throughout the project, I relied on my experience in organising the RUDN University International conference on Sustainable Development Goals, which has been successfully held at the university three times already. In addition, preparations for our fourth SDG conference started back in April, alongside the launch of the first module. The SDGs are a significant priority for RUDN University and a vector of strategic development, so I was happy to share my knowledge with my colleagues, to take part in a large-scale educational programme, and to explore the topic of sustainable development further,” Alexander L. Chupin, PhD in Economics, Deputy Dean for Research at the Faculty of Economics.
