A RUDN graduate student wins half a million roubles for her development at the UMNIK-2025 competition

Yulianna Morozova, a postgraduate student at the RUDN Academy of Engineering, was among the finalists of one of the prestigious projects of the Innovation Promotion Fund – the UMNIK-2025 competition. She received an individual grant of 500,000 roubles.

In total, UMNIK-2025 received more than 3,300 applications from across the country in six key areas: digital technologies, medicine and health technologies, new materials and chemical technologies, new devices and intelligent production technologies, biotechnologies, and resource-saving energy. As a result of the competitive selection process, 500 applications were recommended for funding.

Binding liquid rubber

Yulianna presented a research project at the competition on the topic: ‘Development of polymer concrete based on liquid rubber: an innovative material for the manufacture of building structures with high chemical resistance to aggressive environments.’

“In Russia, which has a wide range of industrial facilities and developed chemical, mining and processing industries, building materials are not sufficiently resistant to aggressive environmental influences, including acids, alkalis and salts. This leads to rapid destruction of structures. Therefore, in 2023, when I was choosing a topic for my thesis to obtain a candidate of science degree, my supervisor Galina Okolnikova suggested that I consider the little-studied area of developing a new class of high-strength, crack-resistant and chemically stable building materials that combine the advantages of elastomers and traditional concrete,” Yuliana Morozova says.

According to the student, the novelty of this material lies in the use of liquid rubber as the main polymer binder. The interim results of the research have already been published in scientific articles at the level of the Higher Attestation Commission and presented at various scientific conferences, including the BRICS conference.

“To implement the project, Galina and I are working on selecting the composition and production technology for a composite material based on liquid rubber, conducting practical tests at the RUDN laboratory, and planning to file a patent application,” Yuliana Morozova notes.

As the postgraduate student notes, her experience in writing scientific articles for publication in the Scopus, HAC and RSCI databases, as well as more than six years of participation in all-Russian and international conferences, including receiving a grant from the President of the Russian Federation during her master’s studies, continue to inspire her to develop and achieve new successes in the field of building.

The fruit of hard work

According to the student’s academic supervisor, Galina Okolnikova, PhD in Technical Sciences, Yulianna caught her attention when she was admitted to RUDN University with her professional approach and desire to develop in the construction industry. The postgraduate student had previously successfully completed her bachelor’s and master’s degrees (with honours) at Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University and was enrolled in our university on a state-funded place.

“Yulianna’s victory is a vivid testimony to the fruits of her persistent and sustained work on the development of an innovative material. Our research is aimed at obtaining composite material for the manufacture of building structures that operate under high mechanical loads and aggressive chemical environments. We expect to obtain a material with increased durability that is resistant to acids, salts and cyclic loads,” said Galina Okolnikova.

The associate professor of the Construction Engineering and Technologies Department at RUDN University emphasises that the university laboratory where they are working on their research is equipped with modern technology, which allows them to practise key production processes. The grant will help to implement a promising project that is of great practical importance for the construction industry.
